I was out on Walton Heath, Surrey the other day and we were doing a bit of schooling on the Mill fields. I stopped for a bit and checked the pommel on the saddle as the numnah had slipped back a little. Not enough room between wither and pommel. I could just fit a couple of fingers in the gap and even then as Cassis moved the gap reduced, so it was time to have it reflocked.
Richard turned up at the yard and spent a bit of time with the horse checking her back over before fitting the saddle. No sores points and any signs of baldness that would indicate a possible saddle rub so we put the saddle on her.
It was easy to see the problem, the mare had dropped a bit of muscle over the year as she has had time off so the saddle was floating above the wither and not connecting with her back properly.
Richard showed me the problem and also indicated how the underside of the saddle showed which leg I favoured due to the flatter flap.
I turned the mare out in the school for a bit while RIchard reflocked the saddle, taking around 35 minutes.
We refitted the saddle and perfect. The underside of the saddle was much softer and there was the right amount of clearance between the gullet and horse.
I would definitely say this is the best investment you can make every year and I would definitely recommend Richard from Spragg Saddlery to get the job right for you.
